What Makes God Trustworthy

The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. – Psalm 19:1

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. – Genesis 1:1

This truth is mind-boggling – the mortal mind can’t fully comprehend that God has always existed and always will exist. Perhaps that reality turns people away from even discovering for themselves everything that God offers. What would satisfy your heart and mind; so that, you would be eager to discover for yourself Who God is?

What if I told you the reality that, even some Christians have never been taught about the (non) origin of God; those Christians have discovered it through an email.

The self-existence of God means that He is not dependent on anything or anyone for His existence. He has always been and will always be. This attribute sets Him apart from all of creation, for everything else has a beginning and is contingent upon something else. God alone exists eternally and independently.

In Exodus 3:14, when Moses asked God His name, the Lord responded, "I AM THAT I AM." This declaration reveals God's self-existence and eternal nature. He is the uncaused cause, the One who simply is. This verse echoes the truth that God exists by His own power and will, not by any external force.

Consider Psalm 90:2, "Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God." Here, the psalmist reflects on the eternal existence of God, highlighting that before the world came into being, God was already present.

Isaiah 43:10 "Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me." This verse underscores God's uniqueness and self-existence. There was no one before Him, and there will be no one after Him.

Revelation 1:8 "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty." God exists outside of time and space, and His existence spans eternity.

The self-existence of God brings incredible comfort to believers. Because God is self-existent, His promises are unshakable. His love, grace, and mercy are not fleeting or dependent on external circumstances. Hebrews 13:8 "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever." We can fully trust in Him because His nature is unchanging and eternal.

God's self-existence assures us that He is supreme over all creation. Nothing can diminish His power or authority. In Acts 17:24-25 "God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things." God is the source of all life, yet He depends on nothing.

As we reflect on God's self-existence, may we be drawn closer to Him in reverence and awe. Let us worship the great "I AM," the One who holds all things together by the power of His Word.
