Letting Go of Control

September 09, 2026•4 min read

Have you ever felt like you had to hold everything together, fearing that if you let go, everything would fall apart? It’s a feeling many of us know all too well. In our desire to maintain control, we cling tightly to the reins of life, navigating its storms with sheer willpower. Yet, this frantic grasp often leaves us weary and without the peace that comes from surrendering to God’s care.

The Lesson from the Storm

In Matthew 8:24-27, the disciples faced a life-threatening storm on the Sea of Galilee. As the waves pounded their boat, panic overtook them, and they cried out, “Lord, save us: we perish”- Matthew 8:25. Their fear was understandable - they were powerless against the raging sea. Yet, Jesus, who was asleep amidst the storm, calmly rose, rebuked the winds and the sea, and asked the disciples, “Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith?”- Matthew 8:26.

This powerful moment reveals a truth we often overlook: peace doesn’t come from our ability to control the storm but from trusting the One who commands the wind and waves.

Why We Struggle to Let Go

Like the disciples, we wrestle with fear and anxiety when life feels out of control. We convince ourselves that managing every detail will bring stability, but this is a false teaching we’ve unconsciously adopted. Think about it: did anyone ever explicitly teach us that control is solely our responsibility? Of course not. Yet, societal pressures and subtle lies, often influenced by the enemy (Satan), convince us otherwise.

Holding on to control doesn’t change our circumstances - it simply exhausts us. And worse, it blocks the blessings God desires to pour into our lives. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us of the better way: “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

God’s Peace Comes After Surrender

There’s a profound pattern in God’s Word: His peace often follows our surrender. Philippians 4:6-7 encourages us, “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

This peace isn’t circumstantial; it flows from a heart that releases its grip on control. Picture a child letting go of a balloon, watching it drift freely into the sky. That’s the freedom God invites us into -releasing our fears, plans, and desires into His capable hands; understanding that He knows exactly what is best for us – He’s asking us, ‘Do you trust Me with your everyday life, just as you trusted Me with your soul’s destination when you physically die (if you have received Jesus Christ as Savior)?’

Trusting God in the Storm

The disciples’ reaction during the storm mirrored what we often do. They let fear take the wheel, relying on their limited perspective. Yet, Jesus, who was present with them all along, offered a better way. Isaiah 41:10 reassures us, “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”

Trusting God requires faith - a willingness to let go of the outcomes we desire and rest in His higher plans. It’s in this surrender that His peace floods our hearts, quieting the storm within, even if the waves still crash around us.

Letting Go to Receive

What are you holding onto today that God is asking you to release? Maybe it’s fear, a specific outcome, or the belief that you alone must hold everything together. Whatever it is, know this: God can only bless you fully when you let go of what you’re clinging to. His hands are open, ready to exchange your burdens for His peace.

As you reflect, imagine yourself releasing a balloon or letting go of a heavy weight. Visualize the freedom that comes as you loosen your grip, trusting God to handle what you cannot.

Whatever storm you face today, be encouraged - God is in control. Surrender your burdens to Him and experience the peace that surpasses all understanding. Letting go isn’t defeat; it’s an invitation to step into the fullness of God’s care and blessing.

When a child loses their grip on the string of a balloon, why do they often cry? Because they ‘lost’ something they wanted. Well, that’s reversed when the things that God never intended for us to ‘control’ are ‘released’ to Him; crying may happen at that moment but, instead of ‘losing’ we’re literally ‘freeing’ ourselves, and can now eagerly anticipate God’s richest blessings – blessings He has longed to give but, has been waiting for us to ‘release’ our grip on things we ‘thought’ were things we needed to ‘carry’.

Release the string and trust the One who calms the seas.
